Cabinetry offers many benefits from both an organizational and aesthetic standpoint which is why it is one of if not the most important features to consider when remodeling your kitchen. With a lot of options available it can seem like a daunting task so here’s our step-by-step guide to everything you need to know in order to select the perfect cabinets for your next home project.
Step 1: Budget
Obviously, the first step in any renovation is figuring out what you’re willing to spend as that will ultimately play a role in what options are available to you. In some cases, cabinets can account for 50% or more of a kitchen remodel cost so doing the proper research is a must. On average, kitchen cabinets can range anywhere from $4,000-$13,000 which varies depending on several factors which we’ll get into next.

Step 2: Cabinet Type
Cabinets fall into a couple of different types each with their own advantages. For those looking for a more inexpensive option, there’s pre-assembled or stock cabinets which are mass produced, readily available, and easy to install, making them a common choice for DIYers. The downside, however, is you’re usually limited in terms of sizing and design. On the other hand, there’s custom or semi-custom which as the name suggests are ordered specifically to fit your layout and needs but keep in mind with that comes a bigger price tag.
Step 3: Panel Style/Color
Now its time to select the type of door. The most common panel design is called shaker which are easily recognized by their bold rectangular frame. If you’re going for a more modern layout, consider the smooth and simplistic look of flat or slab cabinets.
Next, comes the age-old debate of whether to go for a natural wood look or color. Before making this decision, it’s important to take countertops, appliances, and flooring into account to ensure everything blends well together. Based on numerous studies, white was the most common choice because of its neutral properties meaning it will withstand the test of time, but stained wood provides a sense of warmth and brings the outdoors in.

Step 4: Accessories
Last but not least, don’t forget to accessorize your cabinets to add an elegant finishing touch. This includes hardware which refers to the decorative handles and knobs but many also opt to incorporate a glass window unit primarily in the corner to display anything from your favorite China set, mugs, or cookbook.
